I like to keep my menubar simple. There’s MainMenu Pro, where it’s easy for me to fix things in one click, there’s CoverSutra because it’s the only iTunes remote I’ve ever gotten used to since the beginning plus it’s easy to find music without having to open iTunes. Next is Cloud.app, simple drag & drop, who doesn’t love that? Then Wi-Fi, Time Machine, Time, Battery Life and Spotlight. I hate seeing my menubar cluttered with things.

CoverSutra, Adium, Dropbox, CalendarBar, and . Hidden Spotlight icon. Instead of Spotlight I use Alfred, also I bound the Spotlight keys (⌘+Space) to Alfred.

MailMate notification - The fantastic lightweight IMAP mail client from Benny Kjær Nielsen.
CoverSutra - A recent discovery I use to control iTunes without needing to switch back to the main application window.
PopChar X - This utility saves me so much time finding the right characters.
Skitch - Essential for marking-up screenshots and hosting my blog images.
TextExpander - I rely on this to correct common spelling mistakes but also for its ability to shorten URLs and insert text from snippets.
Delibar - I use Delibar to capture ‘things I would like to become bookmarks’ while I’m away from my main computer, sending them to Pinboard.
- In the same way that CoverSutra lets me control iTunes when it’s not visible, I Love Stars lets me assign ratings. I definitely give it ★★★★★.
f.lux - The jury’s still out on this utility that changes my computer display to a warmer night mode automatically.
Tags - One of a number of applications that allow me to use to manage files.
QuickCursor - This great little utility allows you to use your favourite text editor to input data into web browsers. The great advantage of this is it does away with the need for an input manager.
App Tamer - The idea is that this pauses an application when you switch away from it, then automatically restarts it when you start using it again to save battery life.
SlimBatteryMonitor - I’ve had this on every Mac I’ve ever owned and it does just what it says on the tin.
TextSoap 7 - TextSoap is one of those apps that’s barely visible but saves a huge amount of time. I’ve previously and since then it has been updated and gained a menu bar icon as a result.
MenuMeters - Another of those apps I have used forever. Here it is set to display network, traffic, memory usage and CPU levels. Very useful to see if anything is hogging your computer.
Apple’s standard language and text input menu, AirPort indicator and Clock.
Search - This is Tags’ Enhanced Spotlight.

Every app in my MenuBar is used several times per day. There’s no reason for it to be there if it isn’t.
CoverSutra (hidden): A handy and attractive way to control iTunes without ever leaving your current app.
OmniFocus: Perfect for the Getting Things Done® system, but flexible enough for any task management style, OmniFocus helps you work smarter by giving you powerful tools for staying on top of all the things you need to do.
Dropbox: An indispensable utility that allows you to sync your files online and across your computers automatically.
Droplr: The best way to share files from your Mac on the internet. Period.
Caffeine: A is a tiny program that puts an icon in the right side of your menu bar. Click it to prevent your Mac from automatically going to sleep, dimming the screen or starting screen savers. Click it again to go back. Right-click (or ⌘-click) the icon to show the menu.
Time Machine: Automatically saves up-to-date copies of everything on your Mac — photos, music, videos, documents, applications, and settings. If you ever have the need, you can easily go back in time to recover anything.
Airport Utility: Allows you to manage and monitor AirPort Extreme, AirPort Express, and Time Capsule base stations.
Clock
Spotlight: The lightning-fast search technology built into Mac OS X that makes it easy to find what you’re looking for, even if you don’t know where to look. (Note: I keep Spotlight in the MenuBar, and use it occasionally, but predominantly use Alfred.)
